Hi all, I am a new member and would just like to introduce myself. I have never used message boards or chats but I am lonely now and would like to meet people and chat. I am socially retarded ..LOL.. as I have been shut away in my apartment for the last 2 years since I lost my sight. But I have gotten over the pity party and now am going about things and living again. I am 40 years old. Live in wisconsin. Have 2 grown sons, one is autistic. I am a little shy, dont know what to say because it has been a while since I have had an opportunity for intelligent conversation. I love sci fi and fantasy books, outdoor activities: camping fishing and such. I will be attending Blind Inc in Minneapolis within the next couple of months then am going back to college to get my degree in special education specializing in teaching children with visual impairments. I am really looking forward to getting back into the swing of things! Would love to chat with yall and get to know everyone.

Welcome, onja! My name's Lou, and this is the only board of this type I have ever been on. I love it, but it can be a time waster if you're not too careful. For being shy, you had a lot to say. I hope you find the Zone to be a source of encouragement and entertainment, and good, practical knowledge. Check out the various boards on here such as the "getting to know you" "Daily Living" and "Geeks Are Us". The "games" is great fun. If you have questions, use the various quicknote and private mail features to ask people. Good luck, and again, welcome.

Lou

Hi Tonja. Welcome to the zone it's a nice place to live <lol>, and some of us do live here, virtually.

And, also, welcome to the world of the blind. You may find that it's not much different from the world of the sighted, just more fun at times.

If you have any problems or questions please don't hesitate to ask, by way of a quick note, private message or email. Actually, checking out the message boards might answer questions you never even knew you had.

Hope to see you around a lot, we'll take care of that lonliness for you, because we've all been there.

Bob

Hi Tonja

I lost my vision slowly and understand about wanting to lock myself up and not socialize, but we all eventually learn to deal with it and get on with our lives. Congratulations on making the decision to go back to school.

As others have offered, please send me a private qn or pm on here if I can answer any questions or if you just want to chat. A good board to check out is the zone announcements boards. The various features as they have been added to the zone will be explained here, in the order of most recent on top.

Good luck and have fun.

Becky

Hi Tanja,
I'm so happy to see another older person come on here. I'm 48 years old, will be exactly 48 on thursday, my birthday, and I'm one of the oldest women on the zone. I was born blind, and with osteogenesis imperfecta, soft bones, but that's rather a long history. I've never had to worry about being shy. I'm not lonely, but I love to talk, and think talking is a great way of passing the time, provided you have someone to talk to, who likes to talk also, but who also listens well. I won't tell you I'm a good this or that, because I think that's for other people to judge, and it's impossible to be totally objective about onesself, at least in my opinion.

Hi, Tonja. I have responded to you on some other boards, but also wanted to put my official welcome here. This place can get a bit crazy at times, and some conversation is more inteligent than others. (Grin( It is, however, a good place for friends, games, and time-killing. It's a good thing I did not know about this place when I was in college!
